The Trinidad Bay Bed and Breakfast Hotel, https://www.hotel-trinidad-california.com/ did not comply with the City of Trinidad’s unconstitutional 10-12% tax increase January 1, 2022.

We demanded the City reset the tax to 8%, which is what we collect. It took them months, but they have complied.

Guest Hotel Tax (T.O.T) Increases — Decrease 

Round 2:  March 31, 2022 (updated 4/2022) 

We sent a letter requesting the City immediately cease collecting at 10% and that they send a letter. Guess what? Next day, when we filed and paid our guest’ first quarter taxes ( at 8% ), we found out the City of Trinidad California stopped collecting its 2nd UNCONSTITUTIONALLY increased hotel tax! 

12% then 10% now 8% — Why? 

The City has reverted to requiring we charge, collect and pay them our guest’ tax for guest’ stays at 8% — Wonder why?

Similar to our City short-term rental businesses, we are required to account for, charge, collect and pay the City under penalty of fine and late fees. But the City of Trinidad now, 

“…at this time intends to collect the T.O.T. at the previous rate of 8% set by Resolution 93-4 in 1993.  Therefore, from and after January 1, 2022 until further notice to operators, the T.O.T rate will be 8%.”

Refunding Already Paid T.O.T.

The City has not addressed refunding the tens of thousands of dollars in hotel tax it has already been paid. 

The City made no mention of receiving our request to add it up and come up with a plan to address its mistakes. We will be pressing this issue at the April 12, 2022 City Council Meeting — Public still has to “call-in” because our City is still using coronavirus excuses to not hold Public Meetings in Town Hall 

We are standing up to the City and supporting all of our Trinidad California lodging businesses. And to those who made it through the 6 months of City STR Moratorium closures in 2020, glad you made it!

The 26th Annual Trinidad California Memorial Ceremony will commence on Sunday, 

May 30, 2021 at 2 p.m.  

Ceremony at Trinidad Bay Memorial Park (2019)

The ceremony will be held in front of the Memorial Wall honoring those lost or buried at sea, Trinidad Bay Memorial Park, the historic Memorial Lighthouse site on the corner of Edwards and Trinity Streets.

The ceremony begins with bagpipe music by Matthew Marshall, followed by the flag ceremony and pledge of allegiance led by McKinleyville Boy Scout Troop 99.  Dana Hope, Trinidad Civic Club Co-President, will preside over the ceremony and will welcome guests.  The Rev. Nancy Streufert, Priest Associate, St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Arcata, will give the invocation and vocalist Samantha Day will sing “Amazing Grace.”  Honored Guest, Command Master Chief Keith M. Naker, Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay, will address the audience.  A poem by William Cullen Bryant titled, “Blessed Are They That Mourn,” will be read by Patti Fleschner, Memorial Lighthouse Historian.  Trinidad City Mayor Steve Ladwig will ring the Trinidad Head Lighthouse Keeper’s cottage bell.  Janine Volkmar, Trinidad Civic Club Recording Secretary, will read the 268 memorial names, followed by a USCG helicopter flyover. Saxophonist Matthew Brogdon will play “Taps” to close the ceremony.

The memorial, approximately 35 minutes long, takes place rain or shine with no seating available.  COVID protocols will be followed.  To preserve the solemn nature of the event, the roads surrounding the immediate vicinity will be closed from 12 to 3 p.m.  

Beautiful wreaths are created by the Trinidad Civic Club with flowers compliments of Sun Valley Floral Farms; sound services provided by Dj-Kev; videography by William and Philip Plants; photography by Jackie Tidwell.

The Trinidad Memorial Lighthouse was built by the Trinidad Civic Club as a replica of the 1871 Trinidad Head Lighthouse and was dedicated at the historic location on June 26th, 1949. Earl and Neva Hallmark donated the land to house the 1871 Fourth Order Fresnel oil lantern, the last coal oil burning revolving light retired from use on the Pacific Coast, previously housed in the Trinidad Head Lighthouse. The United States Coast Guard placed this lens in the Memorial Lighthouse when an electric lens was installed in the original Lighthouse in 1947. The 1942 Fifth Order Fresnel Electric lens has been on permanent loan to the Trinidad Museum since 2013, when an LED lens was installed at the Trinidad Head Lighthouse. The LED lens is observable 20 miles out to sea.

 

The 4,000 pound 1898 bronze fog bell was placed at the historic Memorial Lighthouse site in 1949, from its previous location on Trinidad Head.  This occurred when the fog warning system on Trinidad Head became automated.  Both the Memorial Lighthouse and the Historic Bell are presently located at the Trinidad Harbor on property owned by the Cher-Ae Heights Indian Community of the Trinidad Rancheria.

What happened?

We took precautions early on, at the start of the Covid-19 crisis. While we were able to stay open throughout the crisis, we were arbitrarily restricted to who we could host. Early emergency orders caused unprecedented cancellations, financial upheaval, and consequently, have put our livelihood and living here at risk.

What now?

To more safely operate and begin hosting out of area visitors again, we've adopted updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines.*

We are cleaning and disinfecting based on recommendations from the CDC. We screen and help reschedule people who are sick. We recommend people at higher risk not travel until it's safer for them as described in CDC guidelines.*

With enhanced cleaning, screening, and minimizing person-to-person contact, we are confidently ready to be fully open and hosting again.

What next?

As the Covid-19 situation evolves, we will continue to closely monitor and adjust to it. As always, we will happily consider input from our community.

With our personal and business health and safety addressed, we must also continue to assist our community. As we do for our Guests, we will assist Trinidad visitors in making their visit safe and wonderful.

Health and safety is now foremost in our minds, and we ask our community for their continued support—for us and for our business, and for all people visiting Trinidad.
